Foneclub ( www.foneclub.org.uk) is a free UK scheme that enables schools,
organisations and charities to recycle old mobile phones for cash, offering an
easy way to donate to school funds or charitable causes that won't break the
bank.
One school that has benefitted from this scheme is St Joseph's College in
Staffordshire. The College's ‘Mobiles Day' raised £2130 following the
collection of 852 old mobile phones from its pupils in exchange for ditching
their school uniform for a day. This was one of the biggest single-day
collections by any school in Great Britain and was promoted and coordinated
using the Foneclub service. The money will be jointly donated to the
LaSallian charities in the UK, as well as going towards St Joseph's College's
own Sierra Leone education project.

“Mobile phones are a must have for every teenager, and there must be thousands of them lying dormant in
drawers all over the country” said Roisin Maguire, Headteacher at St Joseph's College. “Normally, we're not
that enthusiastic about seeing mobile phones in school, but on this occasion, we made an exception!”
The Foneclub service is completely free, and we pay £2.50 for every mobile phone that we receive,
regardless of age or condition. Foneclub also provides free posters and recycling envelopes to help promote
the scheme and encourage more people to hand in their old mobiles for recycling. When the scheme is
complete and all of the handsets have been collected, Foneclub arranges a free collection and issues prompt
payment.

“For anyone looking for an innovative way to raise money for their school or charity, Foneclub could be just
the scheme you're looking for,” said Olly Tagg, Director of Foneclub. “I was really impressed with St Joseph's
College because the students arranged and promoted the scheme themselves. Samantha and Andrew did an
amazing job raising well over £2,000 in just one day” |
